Don’t be afraid to paint (and repaint)
In his YouTube video detailing the fall makeover, Scott assures us that paint is one of the easiest ways to transform a room—and it’s fairly easy to fix if you end up regretting your color choice. “I try to remind myself that you can easily repaint,” says Scott. Especially if you’re just painting an accent wall, the stakes are pretty low—it will only cost you one gallon of paint and about an hour of your time. “Whether you have furniture in the space or plan on redecorating, it’s important to know if the space will be filled with warm or cool tones. If warm, you will want whites with a warm undertone (pink, orange, red). If cool, you will want a white with a purple, blue, or green undertone,” he explains. In the dining room, he knew that warm tones would cozy up the space. “I had a few colors in mind, and decided to go outside of my comfort zone,” says Scott. “I picked Copper Kettle by Benjamin Moore. It gave all the fall feels and was a source of inspiration for the rest of the design. While I was painting the color over the navy, I was regretting it completely, but it ended up working out!”
A (Subtle) Nod to the Season
“I like going to the pumpkin patch or even grocery stores and getting pumpkins to add throughout my home. My local Target or HomeGoods always has such cute fall/Halloween decor,” Scott says. “If you’re not a huge fan of traditional seasonal decor, incorporate more wood tones and rustic elements,” he recommends as an alternative. Finally, don’t forget to consider all the senses. “I also love buying new candles for every season and fall scents just happen to be my favorite!” Introduce textures through woven textiles, scents with candles, and even a fall-themed playlist to set the right tone.
